Came across this article on LJ today.

Still trying to puzzle through the claim that fanfiction is “immoral.”

Thanks for this. The slightly bizarre answers make me wonder what questions the authors were asked - and how well-versed they are in the fics their work inspires or fanfic generally. Is their issue IP/copyright? Or something different? (Integrity of artistic creation, taste, etc?) IP is a legal issue, but not a ‘moral’ one.

In all cases, fanfic seems unlikely to reduce sales of the ‘original’ authored fiction. (And the authors they’ve interviewed are all so profitable that they could be accused of profiting from young readers/audiences far more than fic-writers exploit them.) So that’s not quite the issue either.

One last thought from the (tiny) Maurice fandom. There are good/sensitive Maurice fics and there are crass Maurice fics. But the most arrogant, flawed or otherwise problematic Maurice paratexts I’ve seen are both ‘sequel’ novels that present themselves as ‘legitimate’ books, for sale on Amazon, rather than free-to-read fanfic - which doesn’t seek profit and doesn’t pretend to be something it isn’t. The first is out-and-out badfic, atrociously written and notorious for making fans of the novel/film and appreciators of Forster feel physically sick. The second is better, but still a somewhat arrogant project – professionally published, and lent a not-fully-deserved authority by academic authorship and endorsements from the author’s academic mates (who appear to know less about Forster, the novel or its history than many fans).

Oh, God. I’ve read that first book. It’s… yeah. Awful doesn’t even begin to cover it. But you’ve got a point - the problematic ones are the ones that present themselves as legit books.

I can understand financial concerns, but the moral ones baffle me. Also, there have been times when I’ve gone out and bought the original source material because I took a chance on a fanfic in a fandom I wasn’t familiar with. So… there is that as well. I dunno. It’s interesting, to say the least.
